Scope Mounts & Rings Buyer's Guide: Cantilever, One-Piece & QD Explained

A scope is only as good as what holds it. The finest LPVO or precision optic will never track true if it sits in the wrong mount, at the wrong height, torqued incorrectly. This guide walks through every decision that matters when you mount a rifle scope, so you buy once and zero with confidence.

Rings vs one-piece mounts vs cantilever mounts

There are three broad ways to attach a scope to a rifle, and the right one depends on your platform.

Two-piece scope rings

Individual front and rear rings clamp to a Picatinny rail or dovetail base. They are light, flexible on ring spacing, and ideal for bolt-action and hunting rifles where the receiver sits close to the rail. One-piece mounts

A single machined body carries both rings. This adds rigidity and guarantees the rings are perfectly aligned out of the box, which matters on hard-recoiling or precision rifles. The trade-off is a little more weight.

Cantilever mounts

A cantilever pushes the rings forward over the handguard so the scope sits correctly for eye relief on an AR-15 or other modern sporting rifle, where the flat-top receiver is well behind the eye. If you run an LPVO on a carbine, a cantilever is almost always the answer.

Match the ring diameter to your scope tube

Rings and mounts are cut for a specific main-tube diameter. Using the wrong size will crush or fail to grip the tube. The three common sizes are:

30 mm Most LPVOs and mid-range rifle scopes
34 mm Long-range and high-end tactical scopes

Check your scope's spec sheet before ordering — a 30 mm scope needs 30 mm rings, no adapters.

Ring height and co-witness

Height sets how far the optic's centreline sits above the bore. Too low and the objective bell or eyepiece fouls the rail or iron sights; too high and your cheek weld suffers. On an AR-15, a 1.5-inch (lower 1/3) height is the popular all-rounder because it clears back-up iron sights and suits most shooters' head position. Bolt guns generally want the lowest rings that clear the objective bell for the steadiest hold.

Quick-detach (QD) vs fixed clamps

QD levers let you pull an optic and reinstall it with minimal point-of-impact shift — useful for magnifiers, night-vision setups or travelling with a rifle. Fixed nut-and-bolt clamps are lighter and marginally more repeatable, and are fine if the optic lives on the gun. Warne's QD X-SKEL and Maxima QD ranges are built for a return-to-zero you can trust.

Canted (20 MOA) bases for long range

A canted mount tilts the optic slightly forward-down — commonly 20 MOA — so you have more elevation travel left in the scope for distant targets. If you shoot past a few hundred metres you will eventually thank a canted base for the extra adjustment range. For general-purpose and CQB use, a flat 0 MOA mount keeps your zero centred in the erector's travel.

Torque it right

Mounting is not a place for enthusiasm with a hex key. Two numbers matter: the ring-cap screws (typically around 15–18 in-lb) and the base/clamp screws to the rail (often 30–65 in-lb depending on the maker). Always follow the manufacturer's figures, tighten ring caps evenly in a cross pattern, and keep an even gap on both sides of each ring. A cheap inch-pound torque wrench pays for itself in avoided scope damage and lost zeroes.

  • AR-15 / LPVO carbine: a 30 mm cantilever mount at lower 1/3 height, QD if you swap optics.
  • Bolt-action hunter: low or medium two-piece rings matched to your tube.
