Shotguns are brutal on optics — heavy recoil in both directions, weather, and fast-moving targets. The right red dot transforms a shotgun; the wrong one rattles apart. Here's what to look for.
Why shotguns want a circle-dot reticle
A 65 MOA circle (Holosun's MRS) covers roughly 19cm at 10m and 47cm at 25m — conveniently close to a typical buckshot spread as it opens up. The circle gives you an instant visual of roughly where your pattern lands, with a 2 MOA centre dot when you switch to slugs. It's the single best reason to pick an MRS-equipped optic for a shotgun. See the dot size chart for the full coverage numbers.
What else matters on a shotgun
- Recoil rating: shotgun recoil whips optics forward and back. Solid housings (7075 aluminium or titanium) and proper recoil-boss mounting survive; budget airsoft-grade dots don't.
- Enclosed or capped emitters: rain, mud and powder residue kill open emitters — an enclosed red dot or flip-cap-protected optic keeps running. Our enclosed vs open guide explains why.
- Big window: both eyes open, fast swings — the larger the window, the faster the pickup.
- QD mount: lets you strip the optic for cleaning or transport and return to zero.
- Battery + solar: a 50,000-hour CR2032 with Solar Failsafe means the dot is simply always on.
Our picks
- Best all-round: Holosun HS515CM. MRS circle-dot, QD mount, and rotating lens caps with kill flash — purpose-built for hard field use. The HS515GM is the same optic in titanium.
- Best sealed option: Holosun HE512T. Fully enclosed emitter in a titanium housing with a wide window — nothing about weather or residue touches the reticle.
- Modern enclosed alternative: Holosun ARO MRS. Holosun's newest enclosed rifle optic with switchable reticles.
Mounting and zeroing
You'll need a receiver Picatinny rail (most modern tactical and optics-ready shotguns have one). Pick a low mount — shotguns are cheek-down guns, and a low dot keeps your head on the stock; the mount height chart covers the options. Zero the centre dot with slugs at 25–50m, then pattern your buckshot against the circle at 10, 15 and 25m so you know exactly what the circle means for your gun and load.
