A flip-to-side magnifier is the cheapest way to give a red dot or holographic sight magnified reach — flip it in for distance, swing it aside for 1x speed. But should you choose 3x, 5x or 6x? Here's how to decide.
How a magnifier works
A magnifier mounts behind your optic and magnifies the whole sight picture — including your dot. It doesn't add its own reticle; it simply enlarges what your red dot or holographic sight already shows. A flip-to-side (FTS) mount lets you rotate it out of the way instantly for 1x.
3x vs 5x vs 6x
- 3x: the most popular all-rounder. Forgiving eye box, lightweight, easy to use on the move. Ideal for general AR-15 use out to around 300m.
- 5x: more reach for positive ID and hits further out, but a tighter eye box that demands more consistent head position.
- 6x: maximum magnification for distance, with the most critical eye alignment — best for shooters who prioritise reach.
Matching height and mount
Your magnifier must sit at the same optical height as your red dot so the dot appears centred. Most quality magnifiers come on an adjustable FTS mount; just make sure the height matches your optic (a common lower-1/3 / 1.93" setup pairs well with same-height dots).
Will it work with my optic?
Most flip-to-side magnifiers work behind any red dot or holographic sight at a compatible height. EOTech's G33/G43, Holosun's HM3X/HM6X and SIG's JULIET series are popular choices.
Magnifier vs LPVO
A red-dot-plus-magnifier keeps 1x speed and lets you remove magnification entirely; an LPVO is a single, cleaner package with a true reticle and finer magnification control. See our red dot vs holographic vs LPVO comparison.
Which should you choose?
For most shooters, a 3x magnifier is the sweet spot — versatile, forgiving and light. Step up to 5x or 6x only if you regularly shoot at longer distances. Browse all magnifiers or see the full AR-15 optics range.
Frequently asked questions
Is a 3x or 5x magnifier better?
3x is more versatile and easier to use; 5x reaches further but has a tighter eye box. Most shooters are best served by 3x.
Do magnifiers have their own reticle?
No — they magnify your existing red dot or holographic reticle. The dot will appear larger too.
Will any magnifier fit my red dot?
Most flip-to-side magnifiers work with any dot at a matching height; just ensure the dot sits centred in the magnifier's view.
