Description

The Bushnell R7 10x42 Binoculars, part number R7-1042, are the all-round hunting glass of the R7 range, giving 10x magnification on 42mm objectives with a field of view of 115 m at 1,000 m (345 ft at 1,000 yd) and field-flattener optics for edge-to-edge sharpness — one binocular for the high seat, the walk in and the range.

ED Prime Glass runs through dielectric-coated Schmidt-Pechan BaK-4 prisms with PC-3 Phase coating, fully multi-coated and Ultra Wideband Coated, and the exterior lens surfaces carry the EXO Barrier against rain, dust, snow, oil and debris. The magnesium alloy chassis is IPX7 waterproof and nitrogen purged against internal fogging, 149 mm (5.9 in) long and 770 g (27.2 oz) — the same carry weight as the 8x42 — with 18 mm of eye relief over a 4.2 mm exit pupil, a locking dioptre, tripod compatibility and three sets of interchangeable twist, detented eyecups.

How It Compares

Bushnell calls the R7 10x42 the all-purpose hunting binocular, and that is a fair description of where it sits: the perfect balance of magnification, field of view and portability, in the same 149 mm, 770 g magnesium body as the R7 8x42 but with 10x reach and field-flattener optics. Against the 8x42 you give up 80 ft of field and some steadiness for real gain in detail at range. Against the R7 10x50 you keep the same power but carry 157 g less, at the cost of a 4.2 mm rather than 5 mm exit pupil in poor light. If you want one binocular for stalking, the range and the hill, this is it. See the full binoculars range for the longer options.

Ideal For

  • Deer stalkers who want one binocular for the high seat and the walk in
  • Fox and vermin control, where 10x picks out an outline at distance that 8x leaves ambiguous
  • Target spotting on the range at moderate distance, hand-held or off a rest
  • Hill walkers and birders who will not carry a 900 g binocular

Key Features

  • Glass: ED Prime Glass with Schmidt-Pechan BaK-4 prisms and a dielectric prism coating, plus field-flattener optics for edge-to-edge sharpness
  • Coatings: Fully multi-coated and Ultra Wideband Coated, with EXO Barrier repelling rain, dust, snow, oil and debris from the exterior lens surfaces
  • Phase Coating: PC-3 Phase coating on the prisms
  • Field of View: 345 ft at 1,000 yards (115 m at 1,000 m)
  • Chassis: Magnesium alloy, 770 g — the same carry weight as the 8x42
  • Eyecups: Twist, detented and interchangeable — three sets supplied: low profile for spectacle wearers, a standard mid-height, and a winged design that blocks side light and wind
  • Dioptre: Locking dioptre, so your setting stays where you put it
  • Weather: IPX7 waterproof and nitrogen purged against internal fogging

Frequently Asked Questions

10x42 or 10x50?Same magnification, same 10x image scale. The 50 mm objectives of the R7 10x50 give a 5 mm exit pupil instead of 4.2 mm, which shows at dawn, dusk and under a lamp — but the 10x50 is 927 g against 770 g and 171 mm long against 149 mm. If most of your glassing is in daylight and you carry it far, take the 42.

What are field-flattener optics? They are a lens design that keeps the image sharp out to the edge of the field rather than letting it soften towards the rim, so you can use the whole view instead of only the middle of it.

Is 10x steady enough hand-held?For most people, yes, in short looks and with elbows supported. If you glass for long spells or have unsteady hands, the R7 8x42 is the more comfortable choice, or mount the 10x42 on a tripod — it is tripod compatible.

Will it survive British weather? It is IPX7 waterproof and nitrogen purged against internal fogging, and the exterior lens surfaces carry Bushnell's EXO Barrier coating, which repels rain, dust, snow, oil and debris.

What eye relief does it have?18 mm, and a low-profile eyecup set is supplied for spectacle wearers alongside the standard mid-height and winged sets.
