Description

The Bushnell R7 8x42 Binoculars, part number R7-842, are the widest and most forgiving glass in the R7 range, pairing 8x magnification with 42mm objectives for a field of view of 142 m at 1,000 m (425 ft at 1,000 yd) and a 5.3 mm exit pupil — the steady, quick-to-the-eye choice for walked-up stalking and for birding.

ED Prime Glass works through dielectric-coated Schmidt-Pechan BaK-4 prisms with PC-3 Phase coating, fully multi-coated and Ultra Wideband Coated, and the exterior lens surfaces carry the EXO Barrier that repels rain, dust, snow, oil and debris. The magnesium alloy chassis is IPX7 waterproof and nitrogen purged against internal fogging, 149 mm (5.9 in) long and 770 g (27.2 oz), with 19 mm of eye relief, a locking dioptre, tripod compatibility and three sets of interchangeable twist, detented eyecups.

How It Compares

The R7 8x42 is the widest and most forgiving glass in Bushnell's R7 range — 425 ft of view at 1,000 yards (142 m at 1,000 m) and a 5.3 mm exit pupil, in the same 770 g magnesium body as the R7 10x42. Eight power is the easier binocular to hold steady and the easier one to find a moving beast with, which is why it remains the default choice for walked-up stalking and for anyone who carries their glass all day. Step up to the 10x42 if you want more detail from a static high seat, to the R7 10x50 for more light at last light, or to the R7 15x56 for tripod work. The rest of the range sits in binoculars.

Ideal For

  • Walked-up deer stalking where the glass is round your neck all day and must be quick to the eye
  • Birding and general observation, where a wide field and an easy exit pupil matter more than magnification
  • Anyone who finds 10x too shaky hand-held, or who wears glasses and wants the 19 mm eye relief
  • A first serious binocular that will not be outgrown

Key Features

  • Glass: ED Prime Glass with Schmidt-Pechan BaK-4 prisms and a dielectric prism coating, for resolution and colour fidelity in poor light
  • Coatings: Fully multi-coated and Ultra Wideband Coated, with EXO Barrier repelling rain, dust, snow, oil and debris from the exterior lens surfaces
  • Phase Coating: PC-3 Phase coating on the prisms
  • Field of View: 425 ft at 1,000 yards (142 m at 1,000 m) — the widest view in the R7 range
  • Chassis: Magnesium alloy, 770 g, for strength without the weight penalty
  • Eyecups: Twist, detented and interchangeable — three sets supplied: low profile for spectacle wearers, a standard mid-height, and a winged design that blocks side light and wind
  • Dioptre: Locking dioptre, so your setting stays where you put it
  • Weather: IPX7 waterproof and nitrogen purged against internal fogging

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I buy the 8x42 or the 10x42?Both share the same 149 mm magnesium body and the same 770 g weight. The 8x42 gives a wider 425 ft field of view and a larger 5.3 mm exit pupil, so it is steadier hand-held and quicker onto a moving animal. The 10x42 trades that back for reach, with 345 ft of view and a 4.2 mm exit pupil.

Is it any good for spectacle wearers?Yes. Eye relief is 19 mm and one of the three supplied eyecup sets is a low-profile design intended for glasses wearers.

Will it survive British weather? It is IPX7 waterproof and nitrogen purged against internal fogging, and the exterior lens surfaces carry Bushnell's EXO Barrier coating, which repels rain, dust, snow, oil and debris.

What are the interchangeable eyecups for?Three sets are supplied: low profile for spectacle wearers, a standard mid-height for general use, and a winged design to block out light and wind. They twist and are detented, so a setting holds.

Can I put it on a tripod?Yes, the R7 8x42 is tripod compatible, though at 8x most people use it hand-held or on a harness.
