Description

The Leupold BX-4 Pro Guide HD Gen 2 10x42 Binoculars, part number 184761, are a full-size open-bridge roof prism binocular in Shadow Gray delivering 10x magnification on 42mm objectives with a 6-degree field of view — approximately 105 m at 1,000 m (314 ft at 1,000 yd) — and 17mm of eye relief, the standard format for hill and woodland stalking at a carryable 709 g (25 oz).

The Elite Optical System pairs high-definition lenses with phase-coated roof prisms, fully multi-coated and protected by DiamondCoat 2 on the exterior surfaces plus the Guard-ion hydrophobic coating that sheds rain and fingerprints. The armour-coated rubber chassis is waterproof and fogproof, 145mm (5.7 in) long, focuses down to 2.8 m for detail in nearby cover, and carries a built-in 1/4-20 rotatable tripod adapter; exit pupil is 4.2mm, interpupillary adjustment spans 56–74mm, and three interchangeable Form-Fit eyecups are supplied.

How It Compares

The BX-4 Pro Guide HD Gen 2 10x42 is the all-round choice in Leupold's Pro Guide HD line and the one most stalkers settle on. At 709 g it is light enough to carry on the hill all day, and the 42mm objectives keep the body compact without giving away much at last light. Step up to the 12x50 Gen 2 if you glass long open ground and can steady the extra magnification; that model reaches further but narrows the field of view from 6 degrees to 4.9 and adds 122 g. If you want the range to the beast as well as the picture, the BX-4 Range HD Gen 2 10x42 puts a laser rangefinder behind the same 10x42 format. Gen 2 differs from the earlier Pro Guide HD chiefly in its upgraded Elite Optical System and the three interchangeable Form-Fit eyecups.

Ideal For

  • Deer stalking on open hill, where a 709 g binocular is carried for hours before it is used
  • Woodland stalking and roe management, where 2.8 m close focus lets you pick detail out of nearby cover
  • Night fox and vermin spotting at dusk and dawn, when light transmission decides whether you identify the animal
  • Birding and general observation where a wide, flat 6-degree field matters more than raw magnification

Key Features

  • Glass: Elite Optical System — excellent dawn-to-dusk light transmission, elite-level glare reduction in harsh light, with high-definition lenses and phase-coated roof prisms
  • Coatings: Fully multi-coated lens system with DiamondCoat 2 on exterior surfaces for abrasion resistance, plus the Guard-ion hydrophobic coating that sheds rain and fingerprints
  • Eyecups: Three interchangeable Form-Fit eyecups — winged, medium and low — so spectacle wearers and bare-eye users both get the full 17mm of eye relief
  • Housing: Open-bridge roof prism design in an armour-coated rubber body, Shadow Gray finish, waterproof and fogproof
  • Focus: Smooth central focusing dial with a locking dioptre adjustment that will not creep in the rucksack
  • Mount: Built-in 1/4-20 rotatable tripod adapter for sustained glassing from a tripod

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the right magnification for hill stalking?10x42 is the standard hill-stalking format for good reason — it gives enough magnification to judge a beast at distance while keeping a 6-degree field of view that is quick to pick up moving deer, and it is steady enough to hold freehand.

Will it work with spectacles?Yes. Eye relief is 17mm and the low Form-Fit eyecups are supplied specifically for spectacle wearers, so you see the full field without pressing the glass against your lenses.

How does it differ from the 12x50 Gen 2?The 12x50 has larger objectives and more reach but a narrower 4.9-degree field, 16mm of eye relief and a heavier 831 g body. The 10x42 is the better general-purpose and walking binocular.

Can it be mounted on a tripod?Yes — a 1/4-20 rotatable tripod adapter is built in, which is worth using for long sessions glassing a hillside.

Does it have a rangefinder? No. For an integrated laser rangefinder in the same 10x42 format, see the BX-4 Range HD Gen 2 10x42 or the flagship BX-6 Range HD 4DOF 10x42.

Where can I see the rest of the range? The full Leupold line-up is on our Leupold collection page.
