Description

The Leupold BX-4 Pro Guide HD Gen 2 12x50 Binoculars, part number 184763, are the long-look model in the Pro Guide HD Gen 2 line, giving 12x magnification on 50mm objectives with a 4.9-degree field of view — approximately 86 m at 1,000 m (257 ft at 1,000 yd) — and a 4.2mm exit pupil, for judging a beast across open hill ground before committing to the stalk.

High-definition lenses and phase-coated roof prisms sit behind a fully multi-coated lens system, with DiamondCoat 2 on the exterior surfaces and the Guard-ion hydrophobic coating shedding rain and fingerprints. The rubber-armoured open-bridge chassis in Shadow Gray is waterproof and fogproof, 173mm (6.8 in) long and 831 g (29.3 oz), with 16mm of eye relief, three interchangeable Form-Fit eyecups, a locking dioptre, close focus at approximately 3 m and a 1/4-20 rotatable tripod adapter port — worth using at this magnification.

How It Compares

The BX-4 Pro Guide HD Gen 2 12x50 is the long-look member of the Pro Guide HD line. The 50mm objectives and 12x magnification are for glassing distant hillsides and open ground, where you need to judge a beast before committing to the stalk. The trade is real and worth understanding: field of view narrows to 4.9 degrees against the 10x42 Gen 2's 6 degrees, eye relief drops from 17mm to 16mm, and weight rises from 709 g to 831 g. Most people are steadier with 12x off a tripod or sticks. If you want the same reach with a laser rangefinder built in, the BX-4 Range HD Gen 2 12x50 is the direct equivalent.

Ideal For

  • Open-hill stalking where beasts are assessed at long distance before the approach begins
  • Glassing from a fixed vantage point over a tripod, when a wide field matters less than resolving detail
  • Night fox and vermin spotting over large fields, where the 50mm objectives gather more light at last light
  • Birding and general observation at range — raptors, wildfowl and distant hill ground

Key Features

  • Glass: High-definition lenses providing clarity, colour and image resolution, with phase-coated roof prisms and a fully multi-coated lens system
  • Coatings: DiamondCoat 2 on exterior lens surfaces for abrasion resistance, plus the Guard-ion hydrophobic coating that sheds rain and fingerprints
  • Eyecups: Three interchangeable Form-Fit eyecups — winged, medium and low — with twist-up adjustment over 16mm of eye relief
  • Housing: Open-bridge roof prism design in an easy-grip rubber armour, Shadow Gray finish, waterproof and fogproof
  • Focus: Central focusing dial with a locking dioptre adjustment
  • Mount: Tripod-ready via the 1/4-20 rotatable adapter port — recommended at this magnification

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 12x too much to hold freehand? Most people can hold 12x for short looks but not for sustained glassing. Over sticks, a rucksack or a tripod the extra magnification pays; walked-up and offhand, the 10x42 Gen 2 is the easier binocular to use.

Do the 50mm objectives help at last light? The exit pupil is 4.2mm, the same as the 10x42, so the larger objectives are offsetting the higher magnification rather than adding brightness. What they do buy is resolution at distance.

Will it work with spectacles?Yes. Eye relief is 16mm and the low Form-Fit eyecups are supplied for spectacle wearers, though the 10x42's 17mm is slightly more forgiving.

How close will it focus?Approximately 3 metres, so it is usable for close observation as well as long-range glassing.

Is there a rangefinding version?Yes — the BX-4 Range HD Gen 2 12x50 adds a TBR/W laser rangefinder in the same magnification and objective.

Where can I see the rest of the range? The full Leupold line-up is on our Leupold collection page.
