Description

The Leupold BX-4 Range HD Gen 2 TBR/W 12x50 Rangefinding Binoculars in Gray, part number 185700, are the long-reach model in the BX-4 Range HD Gen 2 line, putting 12x magnification on 50mm objectives behind a Class 1M laser that ranges deer to 1,500 yards (approximately 1,372 m) and reflective targets to 4,000 yards (approximately 3,658 m) — for moorland and open-hill ground where beasts are assessed well beyond a kilometre.

TBR/W gives rifle angle compensation and wind holds, with Bow Mode, Last Target and Archer's Advantage alongside, all shown on a red OLED display. The Elite Optical System covers a 5.2-degree field — approximately 93 m at 1,000 m (279 ft at 1,000 yd) — with a 4.2mm exit pupil and 14mm of eye relief, which is tighter than the rest of the range and worth checking if you glass in spectacles; three interchangeable Form-Fit eyecups are supplied. The waterproof and fogproof Gray body is 159mm (6.25 in) long and 1,049 g (37 oz), runs a CR2, focuses to approximately 4 m and carries a built-in 1/4-20 rotatable tripod adapter, worth using at this magnification.

How It Compares

The BX-4 Range HD Gen 2 TBR/W 12x50 is the long-reach rangefinding binocular in the BX-4 line. Where the Gen 2 10x42 ranges deer to 1,300 yards over a wide 6.2-degree field, this one pushes deer ranging to 1,500 yards and trees to 2,200, with 12x magnification behind 50mm objectives. The cost is a narrower 5.2-degree field and noticeably shorter eye relief — 14mm against the 10x42's 17mm — which is worth checking if you glass in spectacles. Weight is identical at 1,049 g, and the body is only 9mm longer. If ranging is not required at all, the BX-4 Pro Guide HD Gen 2 12x50 gives the same magnification and objective at 831 g.

Ideal For

  • Open-hill and moorland stalking where beasts are ranged and assessed well beyond a kilometre
  • Night fox and vermin spotting over large open fields, where 50mm objectives and a long laser reach both count
  • Glassing from a fixed vantage over a tripod, where 12x is steadied and the narrower field is not a handicap
  • Long-range rifle practice, where TBR/W wind holds and angle compensation are used on every shot

Key Features

  • Ranging: Maximum 4,000 yards (approx. 3,658 m) on reflective targets, 2,200 yards (approx. 2,012 m) on trees and 1,500 yards (approx. 1,372 m) on deer
  • Ballistics: TBR/W with rifle angle compensation and wind holds, plus Bow Mode, Last Target and Archer's Advantage
  • Display: Red OLED display
  • Glass: Elite Optical System over a 5.2-degree field, with 12x magnification and 50mm objectives

Frequently Asked Questions

How far will it range a deer?Leupold rates it to 1,500 yards, approximately 1,372 metres, on deer — 200 yards further than the Gen 2 10x42. Reflective targets are rated to 4,000 yards and trees to 2,200 yards.

Is the short eye relief a problem in spectacles? At 14mm it is tighter than most of the range, and noticeably tighter than the Gen 2 10x42's 17mm. The low Form-Fit eyecups help, but spectacle wearers who glass for long periods often prefer the 10x42.

Should I use a tripod? At 12x, yes, for anything beyond a quick look. The 1/4-20 rotatable tripod adapter is built into the chassis.

What battery does it use?A single CR2.

Is there a non-rangefinding equivalent?Yes — the BX-4 Pro Guide HD Gen 2 12x50 is the same magnification and objective without the laser, at 831 g instead of 1,049 g.

Where can I see the rest of the range? The full Leupold line-up is on our Leupold collection page.
