Description

The Leupold BX-4 Range HD TBR/W 10x42 Rangefinding Binoculars, part number 182883, put a Class 1M laser rangefinder behind a 10x42 roof prism binocular, ranging deer to 1,100 yards (approximately 1,006 m) and reflective targets to 2,600 yards (approximately 2,377 m) — one instrument for glassing and ranging on the hill instead of two.

TBR/W returns a ballistically compensated range rather than a line-of-sight distance, which is what matters on steep ground, and will generate a hold point for a 10-mph wind; Line of Sight and Bow Mode are also selectable, and readings are accurate to ±1 yard out to 1,000 yards. The Elite Optical System gives a 6.2-degree field of view — approximately 111 m at 1,000 m (334 ft at 1,000 yd) — with 17mm of eye relief and a 4.2mm exit pupil, read off a red OLED display. The waterproof and fogproof body is 150mm (5.9 in) long and 1,106 g (39 oz), runs a single CR2 for approximately 3,000 actuations, and focuses down to approximately 4 m.

How It Compares

The BX-4 Range HD TBR/W 10x42 is the original rangefinding binocular in Leupold's BX-4 line and the entry point to glassing and ranging with one instrument instead of two. It ranges deer-sized targets to 1,100 yards and reflective targets to 2,600 yards, with TBR/W giving a ballistically compensated range and a hold point for a 10-mph wind. The Gen 2 version of the same 10x42 extends that to 1,300 yards on deer and 4,000 yards reflective and adds interchangeable Form-Fit eyecups; this original model is the more affordable route to the same core capability. At the top of the range, the BX-6 Range HD 4DOF 10x42 brings the Hornady 4DOF ballistic calculator, Bluetooth and GPS pinning. If you do not need a laser at all, the BX-4 Pro Guide HD Gen 2 10x42 is far lighter at 709 g against this model's 1,106 g.

Ideal For

  • Hill stalking where the shot may be taken at an angle and a true ballistic range matters more than line of sight
  • Night fox and vermin work over open ground, where confirming the range before the shot is the whole point
  • Stalkers who are tired of carrying a binocular and a separate rangefinder and swapping between them
  • Range and long-distance practice, where the 10-mph wind hold gives a usable starting correction

Key Features

  • Ranging: Maximum 2,600 yards (approx. 2,377 m) on reflective targets, 1,600 yards (approx. 1,463 m) on trees and 1,100 yards (approx. 1,006 m) on deer, with a 12-yard minimum
  • Accuracy: ±1 yard out to 1,000 yards, and ±0.2% beyond 1,000 yards
  • Ballistics: TBR/W provides ballistically calculated ranges for accurate shots at longer distances and steeper angles, and can generate a hold point for a 10-mph wind; Line of Sight and Bow Mode are also selectable
  • Display: Red OLED display, readable against dark ground at first and last light
  • Glass: Elite Optical System with a 6.2-degree field of view and 17mm of eye relief
  • Electronics: CR2 battery giving approximately 3,000 actuations; Class 1M laser
  • Housing: Waterproof and fogproof roof prism binocular body

Frequently Asked Questions

How far will it range a deer?Leupold rates it to 1,100 yards (approximately 1,006 metres) on deer, 1,600 yards on trees and 2,600 yards on reflective targets. Real-world performance falls short of the maximum in rain, mist or poor light, as with any laser rangefinder.

What does TBR/W actually do?TBR/W gives a ballistically calculated range rather than a straight line-of-sight distance, which matters on steep hill ground, and it can generate a hold point for a 10-mph wind.

How accurate is the range reading?±1 yard out to 1,000 yards, and ±0.2% beyond that.

What battery does it take and how long does it last?A single CR2, rated at approximately 3,000 actuations.

Should I buy this or the Gen 2?The Gen 2 10x42 ranges further — 1,300 yards on deer against 1,100 — adds interchangeable Form-Fit eyecups and is lighter at 1,049 g. This original model shares the same optical format and costs less.

Where can I see the rest of the range? The full Leupold line-up is on our Leupold collection page.
