Description

The SIG Sauer ZULU6 HDX 16x42 Image Stabilised Binoculars in Flat Dark Earth, part number SOZ6WP16, put 16x magnification on 42mm objectives in a 621 g (21.90 oz) hand-held body, which is only practical because of the OIS™ Optical Image Stabilization behind it — the ZULU6 HDX for judging heads across a glen, or watching a long field for fox from one spot.

Two user-selectable stabilisation modes are provided, Scan Mode for sweeping ground and Target Mode, which increases stability by up to 50%, running on a single AA cell for 30 hours. HDX™ GLASS is completed by LENSARMOR™, LENSHIELD™ and SPECTRACOAT™ coatings through Schmidt-Pechan roof prisms, over a 3.8-degree field of view (approximately 66 m at 1,000 m) with 14mm of eye relief behind twist-up eye cups. The Flat Dark Earth chassis is IPX-7 waterproof and fog-proof rated, measures approximately 180 x 70 x 120 mm (7.08 x 2.75 x 4.72 in) and focuses to 4.0 m (13.1 ft); it is tripod mount capable, and a foam carrying case and neck strap are supplied.

How It Compares

The ZULU6 HDX 16x42 is where the range stops being a walking binocular and starts being a glassing tool. Sixteen power in a 21.9 oz (approx. 621 g) body is only practical because of the stabilisation, and with Target Mode engaged it resolves detail on a far hillside that the 12x42 simply cannot show. Field of view is the same 3.8 degrees as the 12x42; eye relief drops to 14mm. If you want more still, the 20x42 uses the same body and battery. The ZULU6 HDX Marine 16x42 is this optic in high-visibility orange with a floating strap. For 16x with 50mm objectives and SIG's OmniScan stabilisation, see the ZULU6 HDX PRO 16x50.

Ideal For

  • Open hill stalking where you are judging heads across a glen rather than walking onto them
  • Night fox and vermin spotting from a static position over long fields
  • Deer counts and habitat surveys where you glass the same ground for hours
  • General long-range observation without carrying a tripod and spotting scope

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 16x usable freehand? With the stabilisation on, yes — that is the whole point of the ZULU6 HDX. Scan Mode steadies the picture while you sweep; Target Mode increases stability by up to 50% once you have stopped on something.

How does it compare with the 12x42?Same body, same AA battery and 30-hour runtime, same 3.8-degree field. The 12x42 has 17mm of eye relief against 14mm here and is easier over a long day; the 16x42 shows more detail at distance.

Do I still need a tripod? Not for hand-held glassing, which is what it is designed for. It is tripod mount capable if you want to sit on one spot for hours, but the adapter is sold separately.

Will it fog up in a Scottish winter? It is IPX-7 waterproof and fog-proof rated, so internal fogging is not the issue it is with an unsealed binocular.

Is there a marine version?Yes — the ZULU6 HDX Marine 16x42 is the same optic in high-visibility orange with a floating neck strap.

Where can I see the rest of the range? The full SIG Sauer line-up sits in our binoculars collection.
